Balkanbergen är en 560 kilometer lång bergskedja i sydöstra Europa som sträcker sig från Serbien över Bulgarien fram till Svarta havet.
Den genomsnittliga höjden i denna imponerande bergskedja är 900 meter, men dess högsta topp är Botev Peak på cirka 2 376 meter. Balkanbergen har ett viktigt bergspass kallat Shipkapasset, där det finns ett monument till minne av de ryska och bulgariska trupperna från de rysk-turkiska krigen. Landskapet runt floden Iskar är naturskönt, framför allt där den flyter genom en klyfta i bergen.
I Bulgarien är de centrala delarna av Balkanbergen en nationalpark som inrättats för att skydda det rika växt- och djurlivet och även historiska och vetenskapligt betydande platser. Nationalparken har stora ytor med bok- och granskog och många av de arter som finns där finns inte på någon annan plats i världen.
