Staden Paphos är belägen på den sydöstra kusten i Republiken Cypern. Stadens namn är kopplat till Afrodite, eftersom staden, enligt mytologin under den grekiska antiken, ansågs vara platsen där kärleksgudinnan hade fötts och Paphos var namnet på det barn gudinnan fick med Pygmalion. På grund av sitt stora historiska, arkitektoniska och mytologiska värde förklarades staden tillhöra världsarvet år 1980 av UNESCO.
