La Rochelle är administrativ centralort i departementet Charente Maritime i Frankrike.
Det är en vacker stad med massor av monument och byggnader av stort historiskt och arkitektoniskt värde, t.ex. den gamla hamnen och det mer än 40 meter höga S:t Nikolaus-tornet som står på pelare av ek.
La Rochelles gamla stadskärna är en angenäm plats för promenader, då man kan passa på att beundra den intressanta arkitekturen. Stadsporten med klocktornet (La Grosse Horloge) leder in dit och bland de viktigaste byggnaderna man kan se där kan vi nämna Saint Barthélemy-tornet (1400-talet), Christ Sauveur-kyrkan (1200-talet), Justitiepalatset (från 1604), Maison Henri II (1500-talet) och Hotel de la Bourse (från 1700-talet), där Handelskammaren och Handelsdomstolen nu är inhysta.
Staden har dessutom ett flertal museer och då kan vi rekommendera konstmuseet Musée des Beaux Art, Musée du Nouveau Monde, Musée Maritime (fiske och kommunikationer) och akvariet, ett av de bästa i Europa.
