Assisi är en italiensk stad och dessutom ett viktigt biskopssäte, som ligger i provinsen Perugia, i Umbrienregionen. Staden breder ut sig på sluttningen av Subasioberget intill floderna Topino och Chiascio.
Här föddes Sankt Franciskus, som grundade den religiösa franciskanerorden år 1208 och som senare tillsammans med Sankta Klara skapade den kvinnliga grenen av orden, Klarissorna. Helgonets grav finns i den nedre kryptan i Sankt Franciskus-kyrkan, och den är ett viktigt centrum för kristen tillbedjan för stadens invånare och för turister. Förutom den populära Sankt Franciskus-kyrkan har staden andra betydande kyrkor. Sankta Klara-kyrkan (som har en samling vackra målningar från 1100- och 1300-talet och där Sankta Klara av Assisis kvarlevor finns bevarade), Sankt Peters-kyrkan, katedralen, som är tillägnad Sankt Rufinus och basilikan Santa Maria dei Angeli är några av de andra viktiga kyrkorna och religiösa centra.
