Templet är ursprungligen från 1300-talet men det har byggts om många gånger under tidernas lopp. I det centrala Phnom Penh, i närheten av Mekongfloden, ligger det kungliga palatset med sin magnifika silverpagod; intill det kungliga palatset ligger det vackra nationalmuseet, och söder om palatset, Monumentet till Kambodjas självständighet. Det byggdes 1958 för att påminna om självständigheten från Frankrike och invigningen av en ny etapp i landets historia, även om det för närvarande också är ett monument som ärar alla dem som fallit under Kambodjas inbördeskrig.
