Santiago de Cuba ligger i den sydöstra delen av Kuba och det är den näst viktigaste staden i landet efter Havanna. Santiago grundades 1514 av Diego de Velázquez och det är en viktig hamn i Karibiska sjön, omgiven av bergen Sierra Maestra på landsidan.
