  OK, so Barcelona may be one of Spain’s most visited cities. But how Spanish is this Catalonian capital? For those possessing a smattering of Spanish will be sorely disappointed to discover that the official language here is Catalan, kind of a mix of Spanish and French. OK, you can get by with your Spanish guidebook and contrary to what the locals make you believe, most do speak conventional Spanish. But Barcelona is the centre of the Cataluyna region and has the same identity crisis as Scotland and Wales in the UK. They are part of something bigger, but countries in their own right. To get more out of your stay pick up a Catalan phrasebook and make the effort. The locals will appreciate it�
